The Elevator Experience

Recently I was at the hospital while my wife was having surgery. The waiting room was right in front of a large bank of elevators. What I observed was very enlightening.

This particular scene was repeated time after time. A person would walk up the elevator and push a button. Immediately they would begin looking at their IPhone. An elevator would open to their right or left, but they were too distracted to notice. The people on the elevator looked confused—some even frustrated when no one entered. After a while, the IPhone user would look at the button and push it again. I saw one person repeat this action 3 times. Finally, the elevator opened right in front of them and got their attention.

Why do I tell you this story? I could not believe the lack of focus. Lack of focus can cost valuable time not only for you but others. If you find yourself lacking focus, here are a few suggestions:

  1. Be intentional. Find ways to eliminate or mitigate distractions. Have a few time blocks each day and say no to distractions.
  2. Self-care. Mentally, physically and emotionally.
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Take breaks
  • Exercise and eat right
  1. Set and meet realistic goals. It is easy to lose focus when you have no goals. When there is no target, getting distracted is to be expected. Also, having unrealistic goals can cause you to lose focus. Unrealistic goals can become demoralizing.

People who have learned to focus tend to be more successful in life. Don’t get stuck waiting for an elevator—FOCUS!
