HOW TO DEVELOP LEADERS PART 1 (Philosophical)

by | Mar 13, 2019 | Article

1. SELF AWARENESS IS THE FIRST STEP TO GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

Realize their personality type.

Play to their strengths.

Identify blind spots (receive feedback from others).

2. DEVELOPMENT HINGES ON TRUSTED RELATIONSHIPS

What are some ways we show people we trust them? (Tell them)!

Why do we not trust people at times?

As leaders, we need to maintain TRUST with the people we lead.

T        Time

R        Responsible

U        Under promise and over deliver

S        Say thank you, say please, speak words of encouragement, watch your speech

T        Transparency

3. PEOPLE GROW BEST WHILE THEY ARE IN THE GAME

What does this look like?

What is your onboarding process? Watch the process, perform the task with someone’s help, perform the task with coaching and then go solo!

4. ASKING QUESTIONS HELPS PEOPLE GROW MORE THAN GIVING ANSWERS

“WHY” questions can put people on the defensive.

Ask “What went well?” or “How might you improve it/do it better next time?”

An Example:

Tom Watson, the Former President of IBM, had an employee miss a one million dollar sale that the company badly needed at the time. When the employee was summoned to meet with the President, he brought his letter of resignation and placed it on Tom Watson’s desk. The President asked, “What happened?” The man was thankful for the opportunity to explain in which he did. The man rose to leave, and Tom Watson met him at the door, handed him back his letter of resignation and said: “Why would I accept this when I just invested a million dollars in your education?”

IMPORTANT LESSON:
Learning is not experience, but rather evaluated experience.

Asking the right questions helps people to evaluate.

5. PEOPLE MUST OWN THEIR OWN DEVELOPMENT

How do you own your development?

What are ways you encourage others to own their development?
