Make Excellence Your Standard

One thing I’ve noticed about highly productive people is that they hold themselves to high standards. They don’t need someone looking over their shoulders or constantly pushing them to do their best. They take ownership and strive for excellence because that’s simply how they operate.

I’m reminded of a story about my wife, Cindy. There was a season when we both worked full-time while raising two children. Cindy handled most of the housekeeping, and she took wonderful care of our home. It was always immaculate, or so I thought.

One year, for Mother’s Day, she asked for a professional crew to deep-clean our house. Since we’d never done that before, I contacted someone for an estimate. As we walked through the house, he seemed confused. “Do you have a question?” I asked. “I’m not sure how to price this,” he replied. Naturally, I wondered whether this would cost more than I’d planned. Then he explained, “I’m not sure what your wife wants us to do. This house is already clean!” You see, Cindy has very high standards.

Sometimes I wonder why she married me. Maybe she saw potential or perhaps I was a long-term project or a ministry opportunity! But that story holds a lesson. Cindy didn’t need someone to tell her what excellence looked like. She had already set that standard for herself.

The same is true in life and work. People who consistently perform at a high level don’t always need external pressure. They take pride in what they do, pay attention to detail, and don’t settle for merely acceptable. High standards don’t mean perfection. They mean taking responsibility for doing your best, even when no one is watching.

So, what about you? Do you need someone to push you to meet expectations, or do you hold yourself accountable? Your standards shape your reputation, your personal brand, your relationships, your family, and even your health. Over time, the little things you do consistently reflect who you are.

Don’t wait for someone else to demand excellence from you. Make it your standard.
