8 Rules of Marriage
Rule #6 – Die to Self

We are called to die to ourselves every day. As husbands, we are called to lead the way in this, and it isn’t easy.

One of my life verses is Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”

Leading our marriages begins with dying to self. That has always been a battle for me because I can be selfish by nature. I like my way, my agenda, and my schedule. Every day is a choice to die to my flesh and allow Christ to live through me. As husbands, we are called to lead first in humility.

I remember a 32-year-old man who attended one of my marriage events. Afterward, he told me he hadn’t learned anything new and that nothing I shared had helped him. I thought to myself, He’s been married for maybe 10 years. I’ve been married for 47 years, and I certainly don’t have all the answers. But when you think you know it all, you’re setting yourself up for trouble.

I’m almost 67 years old, and I believe I can learn from anyone. I’m always looking for ways to grow as a husband, a follower of Christ, and a man. A teachable spirit is essential to a healthy marriage. Humility begins by admitting we don’t know everything.

So, husbands, die to yourself each day. The more Christ lives through you, the better husband you will become.

Lead with humility. Listen first. Serve first. Be the first to apologize. Be the first to make things right.

Whether you’re 32 or 67, you can become a better husband. The journey of growth never ends.
