Marriage Rule #8- The Problem Is Not the Problem

Every marriage will face problems. Some will be small, while others may require patience, difficult conversations, counseling, forgiveness, and time.

But here’s the truth behind Rule #8: The problem is not the problem. What matters most is your level of commitment to your spouse and your marriage.

Storms are going to come. Every couple will experience disagreements, disappointments, frustrations, and difficult seasons. The question isn’t whether problems will come. The question is, what will you do when they come?

I’ve seen people give up on their marriages over relatively minor problems. I’ve also seen couples face significant challenges and remain married for 30 or 40 years. The difference isn’t that one couple had problems and the other didn’t. The difference was their willingness to work through them.

Don’t Let a Temporary Problem Make a Permanent Decision

We live in a culture where it’s easy to quit when things get difficult. But marriage was never intended to be based only on how we feel when everything is going well.

Marriage is a lifelong commitment. That doesn’t mean ignoring problems. It means being willing to communicate, take responsibility, forgive, make changes, seek help, and keep working toward a healthier relationship.

Before you throw in the towel, step back and ask yourself: Is this truly a reason to walk away, or is this a problem we can work through?

But don’t give up simply because marriage has become difficult. There is a big difference between saying, “We’re having problems, so we’re done,” and saying, “We’re having problems, so let’s figure out what it will take to get through this.”

Special Note: I realize some situations cannot simply be worked through. Abuse, addiction, violence, and other destructive behaviors may require professional intervention, separation, or even the end of a marriage. Commitment does not mean staying in an unsafe situation.

The Real Test of Marriage

Anyone can enjoy marriage when everything is going well. The real test comes when the storms arrive. The goal isn’t to have marriage without problems. The goal is to build a marriage strong enough to work through them.

So, keep things in perspective. Stay committed. Resolve conflict. Seek help when necessary. And when ordinary challenges come your way, don’t be so quick to throw in the towel.

Rule #8: The Problem Is Not the Problem – The real question is how committed you are to working through it together.
