Living as an Example, Not a Warning

Every life teaches something. The question is: what are people learning from you?

Are you being a positive example for your children, grandchildren, coworkers, friends, and the people around you? Or is your life serving as a warning, a cautionary tale that causes others to think, “I don’t want to end up like that”?

That is a difficult question to ask ourselves, but it is an important one.

A warning life often develops slowly through poor decisions, unhealthy habits, damaged relationships, bitterness, pride, or a lack of self-discipline. Sometimes people look at another person’s financial struggles, health problems, anger issues, or broken relationships and quietly decide they want a different path for their own lives.

Whether we realize it or not, people are always observing us. Children, especially, are watching how we handle stress, how we treat people, how we respond to disappointment, and how we live behind closed doors. Our example often teaches more than our words ever could.

The good news is that none of us has to be perfect to be a positive influence. We all fail. We all make mistakes. We all have regrets and areas we need to grow in. But people are not looking for perfection; they are looking for authenticity, humility, and progress. A person who admits mistakes, learns from them, and keeps striving to improve can become a powerful example to others.

Being a good example starts with small daily choices:

  • Choosing kindness over harshness
  • Choosing discipline over excuses
  • Choosing forgiveness over bitterness
  • Choosing honesty over compromise
  • Choosing growth instead of complacency

You may never fully realize the impact your life has on others. Someone may gain hope after watching you persevere. Someone may choose to become a better spouse, parent, leader, or friend because of your example. Your influence reaches farther than you think.

This week, take a moment to reflect and ask yourself:
“What is one thing I can improve to become a better example for others?”

Small changes today can shape someone else’s future tomorrow.
