Eight Rules of Marriage
Rule 5 – Be Gentle with Your Strength
As men, we are often expected to be strong: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Most husbands genuinely want to protect, provide for, and care for their wives. But strength, when not handled carefully, can unintentionally become harmful, especially through the way we communicate.
For me, volume has never really been the issue. Tone can be. A friend once gave me advice that I have never forgotten. He used the illustration of a velvet-covered brick. The brick represented truth, strength, and directness. The velvet represented gentleness, kindness, and grace. His point was simple: sometimes we need more velvet than brick with our words. He told me, “I know it’s not your intention, but your words have a way of wounding people. You can be too direct or too blunt.”
That conversation stayed with me because he was right. Many men pride themselves on being honest, straightforward, and solution-oriented. But honesty without gentleness can leave bruises that are invisible to everyone else except the person closest to us.
The goal in marriage is not simply to get our point across. The goal is to be connected. A sarcastic comment, a sharp tone, or a dismissive response may last only a few seconds, but the emotional impact can linger much longer. Words have weight. Tone carries emotion. And often, our wives are not just listening to what we say, they are feeling how we say it.
Scripture reminds us, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Strength under control is one of the greatest signs of maturity.
Being gentle with your strength does not mean becoming passive or avoiding difficult conversations. It means speaking truth with love. It means correcting without crushing. It means leading without intimidating. It means making your wife feel emotionally safe, even during disagreement.
Watch your words. Soften your tone. Avoid sarcasm that cuts deeper than you intended.
Your wife should never have to brace herself emotionally when you speak. Home should be the safest place in the world for her heart. The strongest men are the ones who know how to handle their strength with gentleness.
