by | May 27, 2020 | Article

The first few minutes when you meet someone are critical.  You only get one first impression.  Strive to improve these essentials in making a good first impression.

Handshake

  • Don’t have your hands in your pocket.
  • Make sure your handshake is firm and your thumb is up.
  • No fist bump or high fives.
  • Your handshake can convey confidence.

Eye Contact

  • Look them in the eye.
  • Make sure your eyes show a smile.
  • It tells them you are confident and interested in what they say.
  • Make sure to break eye contact some so they don’t feel like you are staring.

Show genuine interest

  • Be confident, not arrogant.
  • Don’t be all about yourself.

Smile

  • Make sure your smile is sincere.
  • Your looks improve when you smile.

Remember their name

  • Remember by repeating to yourself when they first say it.
  • Use their name during your conversation.

Have a real conversation

  • Don’t start with, “How are you?” or “What’s up?”
  • Ask direct questions, “What was the highlight of your week?”
