Three Essential Lessons for Young Leaders: Advice to My 25-Year-Old Self

Living without regrets means sharing wisdom gained from experience. At 17, I launched my first business and married at 19. By 25, I owned and ran a $5M, ten-store operation spanning three states. Here’s advice I’d offer my younger self:

  1.  Others Before Self: Shift your perspective from self-focus to others-focus. Initially, I believed employees were there to aid me. I’ve since realized that true success lies in being there for them. While success serves you, significance serves others. Embrace this shift; it’s a path to enduring leadership.

“Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.” – Simon Sinek

  1. Debt: Tread with Care: In youth, we often underestimate the weight of debt. Borrow wisely; limit borrowing to avoid burdening your future. Keep your financial foundation sturdy. Strive to balance ambition with fiscal responsibility, ensuring your dreams are free from unnecessary debt (“the borrower becomes the lender’s slave,” Proverbs 22:7).

  2. Family First, Always: Guard against placing your loved ones on the “altar” of success. Reject the notion that overworking for family validates your dedication. It’s a fallacy that sacrifices happiness for success. Nurturing both your family and your career yields true fulfillment.

Learning these lessons took time, but they’re vital for growth. Prioritize others, manage debt cautiously, and cherish your family. I hope these insights guide you toward a meaningful, prosperous journey without regret.
